About
Lora Burge is the creative mind and spirit behind Broken Hearts Art. At any given time, she is some combo of artist, pastor, chaplain, and proud cat-lady. Born and raised on Whidbey Island in Washington state, she has always loved being outside in nature. She has been in the Midwest for over a decade but her spirit is at peace next to the ocean and in the mountains. She has always loved being crafty and still cherishes a coffee table she built from rescued wood found in the alleys of Chicago. A few years ago she picked up mosaic art and has been making it ever since. She believes that art adds beauty to everyday life. She loves the challenge of trying to capture the intricacies of nature with bits of glass and wood. She finds inspiration while gardening, walking and hiking outside, and admiring the beauty in nature.
A bit about the name: A few years ago, Lora was reading and thinking through the book “Emergent Strategy,” by Adrienne Maree Brown (highly recommend if you often contemplate how to change the world for the better). There was a quotation that immediately captured her heart and directly inspired at least one piece of work:
“Remember you are water. Of course you leave salt trails. Of course you are crying. Flow. P.S. If there happens to be a multitude of griefs upon you, individual and collective, or fast and slow, or small and large, add equal parts of these considerations: that the broken heart can cover more territory. that perhaps love can only be as large as grief demands. that grief is the growing up of the heart that bursts boundaries like an old skin or a finished life.”
-Adrienne Maree Brown, Emergent Strategy
Perhaps our grief and loss also crack us open to all that is beautiful in the world. We hope that something here intrigues you and speaks to your soul.
